The bill was a stopgap measure to avert a shutdown after September 30.
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson canceled the scheduled vote on legislation that would keep the government funded beyond the end of the 2024 fiscal year, which ends September 30. The proposed bill had lost support among over a dozen members of the speaker’s party.
“We’re going to work through the weekend on that,” said Speaker Jonhson less than five hours before the scheduled vote. “No vote today because we’re in the consensus-building business here in Congress with small majorities.”
The legislation included the SAVE Act, which is a provision that would require documented proof of citizenship for those registering to vote. The bill faced insurmountable opposition in the U.S. Senate.
Presidential candidate and former President Donald Trump stated that his party should be prepared to shut the government down to ensure election integrity with the SAVE Act.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For the House speaker as he seeks to build consensus around proposed government funding.
- For members of Congress to be led by the Lord in their deliberations on appropriations.
- For American voters and election officials to seek God’s wisdom as they prepare for the election.
